PEGGY BRIGHTMAN
Smith College : BA (Philosophy)
Lesley College: MA ( Interdisciplinary Arts)
Teachers College, Columbia University: EdD (The Arts in Education)
Peg Brightman started dancing at Smith College under Martha Coleman Myers and Coralie Hinkley.
She continued studies at the American Dance Festival with Merce Cunningham, Jose Limon,
Martha Graham, Louis Horst, and Bessie Schoenberg;
also in Boston and NYC with Lukas Hoving, Murray Louis, Ina Hahn, Sydelle Gomberg, Tony Williams,
Sam Kurkjian, Bill Evans, June Finch, Rudi Perez, Irene Dowd, and others.
For ten years, Peg was principal dancer with Concert Dance Company of Boston
( a National Touring Company) performing works by Sokolow, Humphrey, Gus Solomons, Jr,
Bill Evans and others, while directing the modern dance program at the
Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts in Natick, MA.
In the 1980's she broke new ground by designing her own computer software
as a choreographer's assistant, and created a large body of choreography, performed across New England, in NYC, and abroad, often in collaboration with composers and graphic artists from the New England Computer Arts association. Brightman's work with her two Boston-based dance companies (Mass. Dance Ensemble and Choreo, Inc.,) was supported by eleven years of grant support
from the Mass Council on the Arts.
As part of her doctoral studies at Columbia University-Teachers College, Peg studied visual arts intensively, particularly drawing and sculpture. Her fascination with gesture and the human body in motion can be seen in her figurative sculpture. For more information about her work as a visual artist, see peggybrightmanartist.weebly.com.
In 2001, after seven years in teacher education at National-Louis University, Peg moved to Maine, She began teaching dance at various venues and founded Moving Spirit Dancers --an intergenerational dance company which performed in over twenty-five different churches, community centers and theaters throughout Mid Coast Maine, and was featured on MPBN's Incredible Maine, 2009. Between 2001 and 2012, Brightman created a large body of new choreography for Moving Spirit (see the CHOREOGRAPHY page) . In 2012, Peg moved to Vermont, to continue her life-long work in dance and choreography. For her current teaching schedule and availability, see the DANCE EDUCATOR page.
