For exciting dance reviews, there is no one who can compare with Alistair Macauley of the NYTimes. Most reviewers are just fan clubs for performers; he helps us "see" the choreography and brings us the full experience. I always learn from him; and I've watched his fellow reviewers improve, under his influence. If you don't know his writing, you've missed a great deal!
Choreography is an art form that is undervalued, because so little understood. Also because there is so much LOUSY choreography out there! So many horrendous and lame events ---- who can blame folks from not being interested? On TV, Dancing With the Stars suggests that the purpose of dance is to display as much of the female body as possible, while stringing together a series of tricks, like turning, leaping, splits, etc.. PLEASE!
Luckily there are some fabulous dance films.... Altman's COMPANY, and Wenders' PINA.... and I'm waiting for an opportunity to see Frederick Weisman's BALLET, on the Paris Opera Ballet.
